Since the beginning of time, milk has been producing muscle… naturally. At 5th Quarter Fresh, we are just making it more convenient. Our products are high quality chocolate milk and nothing more. It’s nutrition you can trust.
5th Quarter Fresh began as a conversation overlooking a Friday night high school football game in Boonsboro, MD in the fall of 2012. As we watched the home team come on to the field, we were shocked at the number of players with casts or on crutches. The common belief is that injuries in high school sports were increasing in number and severity. Because we are involved in the dairy business, the natural question we had was, “I wonder if this increase in injuries has anything to do with nutrition- kids just don’t drink milk like we did when we were kids.”
As we began to research, we found that nutrition could very well be playing a role. Most kids are not eating much breakfast (if any at all), they pack poor lunches and the school lunches are woefully lacking in calcium (8% of RDA if they don’t drink the milk), and they go home from practice to fast food many evenings. In short, they are eating excessive amounts of refined carbohydrates, fat and sodium and too little quality protein and calcium. After meeting with a group of prominent physicians, we learned that 85% of high school girls and 70% of high school boys are not consuming enough calcium. When we added up deficient intakes with excessive excretion of calcium due to high sodium intake coupled with calcium depletion from rigorous exercise, it is quite possible that our high school athletes are at an increased risk of injury. As training becomes more intense, the need for proper nutrition, especially post-workout, increases. If this trend continues, injuries will continue to increase in number and severity.
